He came back, but wasn't the same. Another guy I know, friend of a friend, was Green Beret Special Forces, and his Iraq deployments were only four months at a time, because they were very mission-specific; the rest of the time he would have otherwise spent deployed was spent training. He never said it outright, but I could read between the lines, and I'm pretty sure some of his crew were the ones who captured Hussein. Those were the kind of trips he took. Shades of Capt. Willard going up the river to find Colonel Kurtz.
My point: he has a look in his eye now that could melt granite. God only knows what he sees when he closes his eyes at night.
