(53,661 posts)70. Oh, I'm talking about Nixon escalating the war, first times. We organized nationally and practiced
non-violence, with our groups doing national mobilizations, traveling by bus over 24 hours nonstop to get to D.C. the night of April 23rd, 1971. We spent that night in a cathedral in D.C. and walked to the Capitol on the morning of the 24th, with the police forces dogging us all the way. Luckily, we didn't get gassed until things were almost over with, but we were prepared.
Wikipedia's scrubbing our history and they now show more anti-abortion and pro-war rallies in the pages than were before, so it's hard to get text.
Some video from when I was there, with the view from my perspective:
With a clip added on when Nixon resigned:
Near the end there are some trees and that was where we got gassed, after everyone had stopped talking and singing. This is how that was reported including the first time I saw John Kerry in public:
I don't ever get down on Kerry. He's been dealing with the beasts of war and brought the truth of Iran Contra, which got many convictions. He was part of the Winter Soldier hearings for which the RW has never forgiven him for putting in the Congresional Record our war crimes, but we are still dealing with the exact same beasts we always have. We left that night and made the journey back home on the bus. The driver made clear he really hated us.
Our neighbors were able to stay longer in D.C. and were part of The 1971 May Day Protests:

Bu there is no way that the authorities need to gas a residential area like this, they made many sick in Seattle during the WTO.

That's what we used in D.C. back in the day - but there weren't any ziplock bags. We wet bandanas

Yep, saw that too, and also damaged the camera. They were just standing there, and the cops fired on

Absolutely, and they appear to answer to none. It's like a rogue invasion force egging

The mayor should resign and a special election held. Local lawyers should be all over this shit.

Like the WTO in Seattle. It was horrible. They also brought in rural cops who assaulted aid workers.

The Bohemian Grove is part of his Paleo-Christianity routine. He's Bill Hicks reincarnated, too.

'And bottled water turns men gay!' says the Oracle from Austin. Want video? It's epic.
