I think the most frightening thing is; they represent the natural outcome of a forty year conservative attack on government and its abilities to provide social services.

Because of that education suffered, resulting in large blocks of low information citizens. Civil rights suffered, resulting in the continuation of white privilege in place of equality. Eighty percent of the population has seen stagnant or diminishing financial resources, resulting in an ever heavier burden on them.
People are scared and depressed and left with few answers. They have turned to religion (the promise of any reward, even if you have to die to get it, has appeal to the afflicted). They have become angry with no clear target (the low information thing combined with a powerful propaganda effort). They fragment into small groups or clans to pool what little talent and resources they have, keeping us from coming together to halt the attack.

The most frightening thing about Palin and her...........clan is; She is the intended civil product of republican plans.
An armed, angry, low information, controlled through religion, tool. One, I suspect more so everyday, intended to bring down or at least halt the Enlightenment/Age of Reason.
