(22,336 posts)when that's a huge center of racism is an attack. African American women's hair is one place where they have always been heavily oppressed. They are constantly pushed to fit a racist narrow standard of beauty, and the hair is a big place where that push shows up.
Don't get after African American women about their hair. No one should do that. Not with the racist history behind people getting after African American women about their hair. In fact, not even history - it is still going on. We had a number of threads recently about the military's hair rules for women disqualifying every single natural hairstyle an African American woman could have. It is still going on.
Edited to add - why this is relevant is that African American women get huge amounts of shit for wearing corn rows, but then Katy Perry wears them and gets positive attention and accolades. Oh, she's so trendy and cool! African American women can't wear corn rows if they want to sell records, but Katy Perry can.
