Most of the way we express emotion is non-verbal. We evolved looking at each other when we talked. Tone of voice, the appearance of our face, flushed or pale skin, and similar things display how we feel about something far more effectively than the actual words we speak.

Mediums like DU strip that away. You can't see me. The words I type could be said in rage, fear, sadness or they could be completely unemotional. So we have to use markers in what we type to indicate the emotion we want to express.

Curse words are one of those markers. Typing in ALL CAPS is another. Emojis (things like ) are yet another.
