It's sheer probability that if you solicit enough people you'll get takers. Just like the so-called "Nigerian email scam". Have you ever replied to one of those emails? Probably not, but there are people who make a living from that by emailing hundreds of thousands of people every day.
There are also people who go out to fight ISIS (which is more understandable) and people who go out to fight on both sides of the Ukrainian conflict.
