11. Coolest state capitol building

May 2012

Filled with works by native artists. We were there last summer, just before Labor Day. The door was open so we walked in - not a soul in sight. After wandering about for half an hour, we met a guard who said, "Don't forget to visit the other building - there's some good stuff outside the governor's office!". When we left we saw another guard who asked, "Did you see the buffalo? That's my favorite."

Santa Fe has a building that has been in use since the early 1600s. New Mexico has the oldest continuous settlement in the US, going back to the 1200, IIRC. And Chaco Canyon in one of the most impressive sites I've ever seen.

But what surprised me most as a California was how green the northwestern part of the state was.

Bizarre. Although probably less so marybourg May 2012 #1
