The score for external conflicts fought improved, as President Barack Obama, sought to reduce US military involvement abroad, trying to wind down the US presence in Afghanistan and Iraq.


I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that Fred was not talking about the safety of our troops in combat, but rather the safety of Americans in the United States.

Furthermore, given the context of this thread he is presumably talking about internal threats from external sources (directly or indirectly). Fred himself alluded to the fact that the greatest threat we individually face in our daily lives is from "us" not "them".

We certainly have a moderately high murder rate. But according to the 2011 FBI Uniform Crime Report over half of all such murders are the result of arguments. Not gangs. Not robbers. You are many times more likely to be killed by a family member or a friend than by a stranger. So "them" doesn't just include non-Americans. The "them" that poses us little threat also includes fellow Americans whom we do not know.
