what gives me real worth is who I am as a child of God.

Fuck that. That mawkish platitude makes two clear statements:

1. "I have no inherent worth."
2. "People who aren't Children of God have no worth at all."

It's dehumanizing on all levels.

I've been told time and time again that statements of this sort are meant as positive, inspirational methods, and only an uptight jerk would take offense. Again, fuck that.

As someone who hasn't swigged the Kool-Aid, I recognize declarations of religious dominance, in part because they are pervasive and obvious. When I point them out, I am often told that it must be nice not to have to worry about real problems, or that I should "get over it."

Well, fuck that too.
