A co-worker took his wife to the ER a couple of weeks ago. She is 67 yo and had been running a low grade fever for a couple of days that suddenly went higher. The doctor that saw her said that there was nothing he could do, she was dehydrated and her organs were shutting down and it would just be a matter of hours before she died.
