31. Honestly: The Democrats do a poor job delivering services to them
Mon Feb 22, 2016, 10:47 AM
Feb 2016

The rural poor are not beneficiaries of mass transit. The rural poor potentially have high deductibles to pay with ACA. The rural poor are legitimately worried about losing their minimum wage job if the minimum wage rises. The rural poor have not seen proposals that expand or increase welfare eligibility from the poor, especially when Democrats also support low wage immigration expansion, and know that the Democrats also supported welfare reform.

Being upset at the rural poor for not voting Democrat is similar to being upset at a potential love interest after a rejection. It's not healthy and doesn't get to the heart of the question why the rural poor won't vote Democratic.

The Democrats right now are being co-opted on economic populism by Donald Trump. We need to get back to the roots of FDR if we want to get those votes back, even if it is at the expense of partially losing the rich urban vote.
