a purpose in capitalist societies, and members who promote heterosexuality are rewarded for their loyalty - formally and informally (i.e., until recently, the thousands of rights which were given to married heterosexual couples to the exclusion of gay couples who'd wanted to marry and been denied that recognition by the state).

I'm going to leave that idea there for the moment, but yeah, we're on the same page.
