(8,692 posts)There is this old dude, he has to be eighty. He wears the traditional desert attire at all times and rides around on a motorized scooter.
When this guy is around, lets just call him Grandpa. The young women who live there dress extremely conservatively. They don't go for the full black abaya but something similar, shorter and in lighter colors. When Grandpa isn't around, well lets just say I have seen one of them stumbling drunk standing topless in the middle of the street. The young men who live in the house also dress very conservatively when grandpa is around.
I would bet the kids living in that house are about as good a muslim as I am, and I'm jewish. But when the scooter dude is around they fall into line.
Every Muslim I have ever known living in California and Alberta has basically told me the same thing, the entire family in a given area will basically just go along with whatever the most vocally conservative member of the family demands, just to keep the peace among themselves. That norm obviously doesn't put the women in the best position.
