(58,785 posts)to the Republicans. He also knew it was a gross breach of long-established procedure and principle and would severely damage his reputation. He made the statement. His own position as Director of the FBI was never endangered, he had another 8 years in his appointment, and it was never about legal duty or self protection. We have every reason in the world to believe Comey deliberately acted against the Democrats to help the Republicans.
FURTHER, we have real reason to suspect Comey decided to not interfere with Russian cyber attacks against the Democrats during this election.
The FBI knew for months that Russia was hacking DNC computers, but the only notice the DNC had was one agent calling a mid-level IT manager, who didn't believe the call was really from the FBI and never returned the few follow-up calls made over the next few months. The FBI is thus able to claim they warned the DNC. In fact, the FBI NEVER contacted anyone higher up and, even though the FBI and DNC are almost literally without shouting distance in DC, the FBI never visited the DNC offices to discuss this.
The FBI also knew Russia was hacking Democratic congressional candidates.
BUT, the FBI discouraging electors by threatening to manufacture evidence to imprison them? He couldn't do that here and get away with it. Not yet anyway. Note the tremendous difference between what you're imagining and what he has done, one a simple statement using the excuse of reporting to Congress and the second a malicious neglect after documenting the notice given, and what you're imagining.
