When I enter a thread, if there's nothing there of interest to me, I simply use the Back button to return to the thread list I was browsing. One or two seconds.
I don't even notice such things, and there are so many interesting threads on DU that it's merely a brief delay until I find one.
As for workplace restrictions, I can't really address those. I work for myself, so I have no such restrictions. If I worked at a place that imposed such restrictions, though, I'd do exactly what I do when I encounter a thread that doesn't offer me any information. I just leave it and choose another thread.
