Once they found out that there was a lot more dough in being lobbyist for gun manufacturing and shills for the Republican they became crazy. Back in the thirties they were for gun licensing and stayed very much gun safety oriented right through the fifties. i to grew up with shooting sports and have nothing against them I just found more interesting things to do. As far as self defense goes I think a handgun is useless. I think of people carrying one as Walter Mitty types, living in a TV fantasy whre they become killer heros, but nearly all of them are pretty harmless.
