I don't "celebrate" the 4th of July. As an African-American, I choose to take the day to read Frederick Douglass's "What The 4th of July Means To A Slave", the SCOTUS decisions in Dred Scott v.Sanford and Plessy v.Ferguson.
Besides, July 4th was NOT when the United States became independent, it was on Sept 3.1783 with the signing of the Treaty Of Paris which Great Britain formally recognized the United States of America as independent. Once again, legend takes over for historical fact.
