Also, as to Twitter, it's overflowing with trolls right now. If you care to comment, comments are taken more seriously if you use a real picture of yourself in your profile. Some use their real names, many, most don't. If you are just going to follow (read) and aren't really commenting it doesn't matter if there's no picture, fake name. It the Twitter verse, you look to gain 'followers'. Similar to the concept of DU's post count, the more followers, the more gravitas your tweets have.
People will randomly follow you as you post or retweet things, or in some cases if you follow them, they follow you back.
