The only comfort was that Penny was calm and didn't seem afraid, almost as if she knew it was time and was ready. I cradled her head in my lap. They gave the whole family some time alone with her first. My son reached in his pocket and pulled out some strawberries- her favorite thing she would also sneak out from our garden. She just looked at him with sad eyes, and didn't eat them. We knew then that she was ready to die. She went very peacefully, just closed her eyes, and it was all over in a couple of minutes after they gave her the injections.
But I miss her so much - and even my old cat, who always aggravated the dog, seems to miss her too. The cat is 17 and sleeps on my desk all day. Today she has been up and around, pacing the whole place, climbing on everything, clearly looking for the dog.
God this is so hard.
