2. Externalities are synonymous with the evils of capitalism run amok.

The profit motive - without social constraints - is a hideous thing to unleash on mankind. It is out of the bottle and there is no retubing this malignant toothpaste without a wholesale change to the driving forces of capitalism...we MUST replace the slavish devotion to short term (quarterly and annual profits) gains over long term (decades and generations) stability of businesses.

The idea that boards and CEOs must ONLY protect and promote share holder equity =- ABOVE ALL ELSE -= is insanity. A business plan that does not adequately handle its own costs without stealing from the communities that host them is a business unfit for the market, period.

Take the grift out of the existing system and you have my ear for "market forces" discussions...but without addressing the issues of fair taxation, corporate responsibility for pollution and 'externalities' and ending the extortion of communities by corporations looking for greater kick backs to stay in place, then you are whistling past the graveyard.

Capitalism is on the brink of devouring itself. Those who wish to see it survive need to adopt a new mantra, a new paradigm for how to make the best elements of it work and the base elements of it eliminated. Failure to recognize this will eventually lead to violence on a scale that makes Seattle or Hamburg seem like a shoving match in the playground by comparison.
