(53,410 posts)I worry that it would mean going back to business as usual of the pre-Trump fiasco.
We forget that our government has not been a very good one in the last few decades and that it's gotten worse over time. We still have the Plutocracy and Olygarchy ruling this country. That hasn't changed, and it's one of the worst symptoms of what this country has devolved into. If Pence or Paul Ryan become President we'll be right back to the very thing that birthed the Trump win.
The fact that in this day and age we're having to re-fight for civil rights that were won is disheartening. The fact that the greatest issues of our lifetimes are being actively fought against will make the future of this planet a slide into dystopia. The Republicans will continue their march over the cliff of planetary destruction, all in their effort to squeeze more wealth for themselves and their buddies.
It could very well be that we lose all our hard won rights within five years of corrosive legislation. Maybe even sooner if Trump's anti-transexualism is any example of Republican erosion of the true job of government which is to make life for it's citizens the best one possible among nations and in history.
I fear we will lose all the progressive gains we've fought for. We're still having to fight to keep the gains we made as women, minorities, immigrants, LGBTs because we're losing them on a daily basis in the states. We're losing our voting rights too. State by state. It's profoundly alarming if you pay attention. The GOP has made huge gains and inroads into implementing their inequality agenda.
I fear that the institutional upheavals against Trump, which are just now beginning to rise will not be strong enough if they can't be focussed on him as the head of the opposition to our American Democracy. His departure will enable the GOP to put a stranglehold on our government that we will never be able to defeat. The majority of Americans will fall back into thinking everything is OK again and gaining their attention will be as impossible as it's been for decades. Trump's presence and destructively outrageous behavior is getting their attention and making them alarmed. It's waking the country up and if he's removed the country will slumber again.
With Trump as the personification of everything we don't want in our country, the resistance that we see being birthing now is exactly what this country needs to actually make progressive steps into a better future for all Americans, and for the rest of the world. If we want to change the downward spiral of our ability to take on the really great issues that Climate change is bringing our way we have to change on a fundamental level in our government. Resisting Trump and everything he stands for might just be making us stronger as a country.
Yes, we are the laughing stock of the world right now. This country has an opportunity right now to evolve into something better for us and for the world. But only if it wants to. Only if it is motivated.
I worry.
