In the article adapted from Rick Perlstein's titled: "How Political Lies Became the New Normal" this phenomena discussed.
Dating from the 1980's "There evolved a new media definition of civility that privileged "balance" over truth-telling-even when one side was lying."...Right-wing ideologues lie without challenge since the so-called "balanced networks frame their lies as just another he-said-she said controversy.

The truth is often one-sided or lop-sided. Giving equal time to "both sides" is not real journalism.
