For history about how abortion and Roe was fine in conservative religious circles until the mid 70s.

Right wing groups needed something to agitate people to vote for the GOP when drive for segregated schools no longer worked as well as it had.

With Schaeffer's help, they created the anti-abortion movement and Falwell's Moral Majority.
