For the sake of argument, he was taking her allegations seriously and at face value. Even though the charge of groping her through a flak jacket while she slept and he posed mischievously for a photograph is fucking nonsense on its face.
this is what someone does when someone says you've hurt them. You don't tell them their feelings are wrong - you acknowledge their feelings, validate them as a person, and state why they might feel that way.
God, even his being an exemplar of the most humane way to deal with someone who says you hurt them works against him. As your misunderstanding shows.
