Voters Want Edward Snowden Trial

The White House recently rejected a petition calling for the Obama administration to pardon Edward Snowden, the former spy who exposed the National Security Agency’s bulk surveillance program. Voters not only agree with that position but also want to see the whistleblower tried in court, according to a new poll.

Morning Consult polling elicited strong opinions from registered voters who support the United States pursuing a criminal case against Snowden for his actions. Fifty-three percent said they support the federal government prosecuting Snowden in court; just 26 percent opposed that course of action.

Almost a third of respondents — 29 percent — said they would strongly support a criminal case against the man currently in exile in Russia.

Neither party showed much sympathy for Snowden: 56 percent of Democrats and 64 percent of Republicans said they would support government charges against Snowden. Forty-two percent of independents agreed.

Edward Snowden Unpopular at Home, A Hero Abroad, Poll Finds
The whistleblower is viewed negatively by 64 percent of Americans familiar with him, results say.

A poll of Americans and people living in nine other Western countries has found exiled whistleblower Edward Snowden is far more popular abroad than he is at home.

Snowden, a contractor who worked with the National Security Agency, ignited an intense, ongoing global policy debate about mass surveillance in June 2013 by exposing the collection of vast amounts of phone and Internet records and communications by the NSA and allied intelligence agencies.

For his efforts, about 64 percent of Americans familiar with Snowden hold a negative opinion of him, according to KRC Research poll results shared with U.S. News. Thirty-six percent hold a positive opinion, with just 8 percent holding a very positive opinion.

The survey was commissioned by the American Civil Liberties Union, which provides legal representation to Snowden, who received asylum in Russia after the U.S. canceled his passport.

That last poll was taken by the ACLU & I'm guessing these weren't the results they were hoping for. Ironically, President Obama stands at nearly 60% approval right now. I think that approval would drop by 20 points if he pardoned this overprivileged asshole. It certainly wouldn't be fair to the hundreds of thousands who are locked up on minor charges. Treason is not small change.
