(66,275 posts)It may be unfair of me to compare my cherished memories of growing up there with the sort of political realities I was unaware of as a kid. But I often wonder if Texas has taken a step backward, not from where it should be today, but even from where it was when I was young.
We attended my grandparents' Baptist church on Sundays when I was little, and the sermons were about love, mercy, forgiveness, and brotherhood.
My brother and I attended a service at the same church twenty years later, and the pastor was thundering hatred against gays, lesbians, liberals, pacifists, social justice movements, etc.
I realize that the unpleasant events convulsing Texas right now may just be the last gasp of a dying way of life; the petty, mean, hateful, selfish, distrusting way of life of the white power structure. And that we may be looking forward to a new True Blue Texas sometime in the future. But it can't come soon enough.
