8. If the past is prologue, the most likely scenario isn't very good at all.

Because historically, societies have had to go through traumatic crises for deep, substantive change to be allowed through.

The crisis typically has to be so bad in fact, that the very elites find it intolerable and thus often (though not always) become the prime movers for such changes themselves.

That's how it usually goes - and yet:

This is America. We'll find a way through this cesspool. Whether it's by way of a mass movement, or an enlightened group of influential people, or even just one very charismatic individual (like Robert Kennedy in his day), we'll find our way before things get too ugly. I know we will.

We may be on our way already.
