It attacks the "manliness" of the cuckold.
It presupposes that men are supposed to be in control of their women. If a wife has an affair, she is out of control, in the way sexists think. If a man can't control his wife in all aspects, he is "girly". Of course, they consider men having affairs as "manly", provided the man doesn't get noticed by those not directly involved or the public.
