in 1968. Johnson did not seek re-election due to his being mired down in the Vietnam war. RFK was assasinated, the anti-war people wanted McCarthy but Humphrey got the nomination and could not hang on to the base of the Democratic party. Enter Nixon.
Although not exactly the same there are parallels. If Obama loses the base it's not a stretch to imagine a Republican in the White House.
