We had a note. In my case, it didn't help with any understanding.

Pretty much sums it up.
I wouldn't wish this kind of pain on anyone, and over 2 years later I still haven't recovered.
I only tell you this because your comment about searching for a "Why" struck an emotional chord with me. I've done the same thing over and over even though I'm certain now that I'll never really know.
I hope your family has found some peace.
