(32,610 posts)Actually we're both and neither. We're more like a congomeration of both systems.
In a democracy everyone votes for everything, like a town hall meeting of a small town. No mayor or leader makes a decision, it's made by everyone together, after debate and hearing all sides. Well this works for a small group (like in the beginning of our country) but it became unwieldy with urban growth and people moving out to the wilderness.
So the founding fathers realized this and incorporated aspects of a republic, where elected representatives - executives, legislative officials, and judicial representitves - were voted on and delegated to carry on the business of the people. In some states the judges are elected but others have changed to appointment by the governor to take the politics out of the judicial system. (Tell me a governor's appointment isn't also political.)
For the most part we really aren't a democracy any more, especially now that the Republican Party has taken over. But they cheated to get where they are now, in the catbird seat. The GOP can only win when they cheat, and that's why they're always looking for ways to game the system.
