Sorry, the second point about fringe groups is garbage. Its criticism is that caucuses are only attended by passionate voters so we should do away with them is faulty reasoning. Because people dont care enough about who gets elected we should penalize and criticize those that do? Thats a seriously jaded perspective.
Id rather the people that actually care make the choices than the jaded and apathetic. Its that very perspective that creates that awkward dichotomy of super low approval ratings for congress but 97% incumbency rates and people that do little to nothing but spend 30 years in DC.
Im not saying the caucus process is better or worse. As I stated, it needs tweaking and we need a national voting holiday. The thing is we need to start playing toward our better traits and discouraging the bad traits. Meaning we should not be so jaded about the political process that we cater to the apathetic and clueless voter.
The caucus process ensures that, at least at some level, we have active and involved voter participation and we need more of that and not less.
