Yes, you're correct..golf is usually a pleasure endeavor (but some can get competitive!) so for the most part whether walking or riding in a golf cart the pace of play stays pretty consistent.
But let's say your group has 4 people and the group behind you only has 2 or 3. So naturally it takes more time for your group to complete a hole than for the 3-some. So they are usually waiting on you.
As a courtesy at some point you stop (usually at the next tee box) and wait for the following group to get there. Then you let them know to "play through"..i.e. tee off ahead of you since they are faster. You wait for them to get ahead and then continue. It's simply courtesy.
Gentlemen golfers do it all the time.

The fact that these asswipes complained on the second hole indicates that it wasn't slow play that had them pissed, it was "brown people" playing on "their" course that got them upset.

If I owned the club, I would fire the white privileged douche bags and grant the ladies lifetime memberships.
