Natural gas is far cheaper and cleaner. The price doesn't fluctuate as widely as coal and it puts less wear and tear on the facility as burning natural gas doesn't generate large amounts of sulfoxide compounds that become acidic when interacting with water in the air.

Wind and solar are now to the point where they are as cheap or cheaper than coal. Plus consumers in most of the country want cleaner energy. I know that if a new coal plant was proposed where I live, it would have difficulty getting past the various boards and approval that power companies need for that kind of infrastructure change.

This seems like a way for Trump to show his donors from coal that he hears them... unfortunately for him, electricity providers just don't want the coal.
