He loaded them up with unsustainable debt but spent nothing upgrading the stores. The last time I went in one was in 2005 and I remember thinking "What the hell happened?" I worked at Joskes/Dillards for 13 years in the 70s and 80s. I could have done a better job running Sears than Lampert did.
