In reply to the discussion: BREAKING ON MSNBC: Notre Dame Cathederal in Paris is on fire. [View all]displacedtexan
(15,696 posts)68. One of the times I was there, I dashed inside to get out of the rain.
There was a nun's funeral in progress & the massive, intricately carved wooden grill doors to the main vestibule were closed. Tons of tourists were crowded together, trying to get a glimpse of the service, when someone's camera announced, "Too dark. Use flash," and continued to repeat the command until the owner could stop it.
That moment, when everyone tried so hard not to laugh, always stays with me because state-of-the-art technology was disturbing @900 years of art and architecture that symbolized glory to God.
This is a truly sad day.

Yep, the roofers did it with a torch and walked away, likely w/o even calling the Fire Depatment.

The spire just went down. Hopefully this isn't terrorist related but the scene reminds me of the WTC

Dumping tons of water on an already weakened structure would cause it to collapse

Here's a clearer image of the inside of Notre Dame cathedral, one of the first since the fire.
