The Iran nuclear deal very publicly addressed JUST getting a nuclear weapon. Many sanctions levied for other reasons by the US remained in effect. The stated reason was that a comprehensive solution was not then in the cards. As it was, it was dificult to get the nuclear deal we did -- where Secretary Moniz, an MIT professor of nuclear energy, led in developing the monitoring program. Even Israel's military and intelligence agreed that it was better for Israel because it meant that Iran would not suddenly get a nuclear weapon.
Yes, I know it is unpopular with Israel and that BiBi fought it as hard as he could. In retrospect, that was not because he genuinely believed that did not effectively make it much less likely for Iran to get a nuclear weapon, but because it made war against Iran less likely. It is pretty well documented that before 2015, BiBi wanted to bomb Iran ... and even better if it was the US that did so.
As it was, while Obama was President, it was Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States that blew up every ceasefire the UN or US tried to get on Yemen. Iran actually cooperated. The MAIN source of Islamic violence - including AQ and ISIS - comes out of the extreme form of the Sunni branch of Islam.
