The statute of limitations is tolled if a person can not be arrested in such cases where he or she leaves the country and cannot be extradited. Since the president cannot be tried for a crime simply because he or she is president, the courts may find that this would be similar enough to start the statute of limitation once he or she (would someone please come up for a singular pronoun that means he or she) leaves the office.
