(10,126 posts)There are organizations that provide transition shelter and aid, but they're way overrun by demand. One of the shelter organizations based in San Jose (and they cover all of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties) was pleased to announce earlier this year that they can now provide protected parking for families - no room, no help, but at least a place where you can sleep in your vehicle without worrying about being disturbed - and have some access to bathing facilities.
I live mid-Peninsula, between San Francisco and San Jose. The homeless aren't as obvious here as they are in SF, but you can find them if you know where to look. There are a lot of people who live in their vehicles, probably a lot more than street people. And while we don't get MidWest-type blizzards it does get below freezing here in winter: a homeless person in my town died of exposure a few winters back.
