you have to wonder.

Imagine the outrage at, "Brazil kept slavery for longer than the US, and it was taken off the books in some parts of Africa only in the early 1900s. Look at what racism looks like in China. Not condoning racism in the US."

It's a question of focus, of goal. Imagine Sue and her friend Bearach see a guy raping an intoxicated woman in the corner at a party. Bearach says you two need to stop him. "Yeah, but Bearach, remember that time when you were 16 and we were high and you didn't get consent before we had sex? Not condoning the rape, and just last year you deadnamed my kid sister's daughter, so it's not like you have any room to talk. Get me another Russian Mule." That works if the goal is to do nothing. Or continue to berate Bearach for the past or for lesser "crimes". It doesn't help if you want to actually make the present any better.
