My “hazing that wasn’t”: before I got on the bus to go to spy school, my drill sergeant gave me some fatherly advice: at Fort Devens they like to play games with you the first night you’re there. Don’t fall for it.”

Twelve hours later, the bus dropped me off in Ayer, MA, and a van to take me to the base was waiting. It was snowing extremely hard that night.
