The military mobilization, perhaps the most dramatic of Trump's border-related steps, involves 1,000 Army soldiers and 500 Marines who officials said are headed for El Paso and San Diego, Calif.
Acting Secretary of Defense Robert Salesses said the deployment would include Air Force planes to deport migrants, as well as helicopters, flight crews and intelligence analysts to support increased detection and monitoring efforts along the border. It will be overseen by the Colorado-based Northern Command, which is responsible for defending the U.S. homeland.
UH-72 Lakota helicopters began flying this week along the border in support of CBP operations, the official said. The Pentagon's U.S. Transportation Command was positioning a total of four aircraft in El Paso and San Diego: two C-17 Globemaster III cargo planes and a pair of C-130 Hercules transports, which can carry troops, equipment and supplies. Drones are also being deployed.
