(90,633 posts)"Ingredients" (I don't know how else to describe them) are ubiquitous, everything from whey to added vitamins. It's very discouraging. Food labeled "Made in USA" may be loaded with crap created in China.
There is one community that really cares about sourcing its food supply, however, and is willing to pay what it takes for peace of mind. Orthodox Jews. They may do it for religious reasons, but in the absence of anyone else who gives a damn about our food safety, I say thanks. According to an LA Times article I read a couple of years ago, there is a rabbi who is actually physically based in China whose job it is to trace everything that is food or that goes into food to its source.
