A cannon would do it, pointed directly at the head a few inches away. Definitely more humane and definitive.

The way I see it is this: If you're wrong, you can never fix it, and were wrong a lot. If you're right, it's too easy on them. Either way, it's SIMOKY bunk based in a religious notion of vengeance. Dead people are dead, and do not suffer.
