...someone brought it along "just in case" the opportunity came up, and, luckily, the cops dispersed them before it did.

My experience with movement activity is that there is usually a small but significant number self-destructive and violent people involved - for instance, the so-called black block - and that their destructive tendencies shouldn't be allowed to harm innocent people or discredit the movement as a whole. They certainly should not be provided a lame "cover story". Nobody believes it, and it makes those who propagate it seem either foolish and naive.
