When Rachel Dolezal was about to embark on a new life in Spokane, Washington, in 2012, she had a warning for her brother, Ezra Dolezal, according to his account.
"She just told me, 'Over here, Im going to be considered black, and I have a black father. Dont blow my cover,'" Ezra told Buzzfeed.
Three years later, Rachel is in the midst of a racial identity scandal that first emerged when her white, Montana-based parents came forward this week with the allegation that Rachel, who became the president of the local NAACP chapter in Spokane, was pretending to be African American.
In an interview with Buzzfeed, her adopted brother, who is African American, surmised that she "wanted to make a new life for herself but she took it to the ultimate extreme."
Additionally, he said, she told him to tell others that they were related by blood, and he accused her of brainwashing their younger adopted brother Izaiah, who she has claimed as her son.
Ezra took issue with a number of other elements of Rachel's account of her life, and said her attempts to darken her complexion are "basically blackface.
The NAACP has stood by Rachel in a statement that said, "Ones racial identity is not a qualifying criteria or disqualifying standard for NAACP leadership."
