18. When I was young I had a Mormon friend who invited me to her day camp

I used to stay with family friends who lived in the suburbs and I would stay with them for two weeks in the summer in the sun since I lived in foggy San Francisco. I went with my friend
Who lived next door to this day camp and met an elder. He talked me with and said I should look into the Mormon church. I actually enjoyed myself as this camp. On one of my phone calls to my Mother, I mentioned going to the camp and saying I liked the Mormon church. There was this long silence on the phone and then my Mom told me they didn’t allow black people in the Mormon church. I am a very light skinned black person and could pass for white. I went to the camp the next day and told the elder what my Mother said, he told me I was ok because God blessed with with white skin. I was only 15 and a little confused over this. Anyway 2 days later I was back in San Francisco and on an airplane to Chicago to spend some time with my Grandma. I later found out from the family friends that they were concerned about the Mormons trying to convert me and that my parents were also upset. But I will never forget, “you are ok, because God blessed you with white skin”.
