He was a stunt man before he became an actor. Jumping and falling off of horses not to mention riding them must have turned his back into a wreck. Read about the men who fought and died with Custer. Their skeletons showed huge damage to their spines. And they were all about age 20. Wayne was older than that, late 30s I believe. So his deferment may have been authentic.
