19. washingtonpost.com uses cookies to manage its paywall

You are allowed a certain number of "free" articles per month. Your browser keeps track of this using "cookies". Private/Incognito/Anonymous browsing is something you can access from your web browser (different browsers call it different names, but it is essentially the same thing). It creates a new browser tab or window that does NOT save any new cookies, nor allows access to previously saved cookies.

So, to washingtonpost.com, your new browser window/tab appears like a brand new person accessing their site for the first time, which means you get a new batch of "free" articles each time.

It is not a perfect system, and other sites manage their paywalls differently. Some detect Private mode and refuse to display any content, for example. This article can help explain it further.
