I think the best way to describe them is 'superstitious atheists.' Regular atheists usually have some sort of ethical code, but those who pretend to follow a religion don't really believe in anything at all. They just have some empty rituals that they use to make them feel better in the same way an obsessive-compulsive will perform a task a certain number of times to calm himself.
